Wheelchair Basketball Canada and Ottawa2026 are excited to announce that registration is officially open for the 2025–2026 edition of the Ottawa2026 Schools Program—a unique and inspiring opportunity to bring the inclusive sport of wheelchair basketball directly to local classrooms.

Spots are limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis so don’t wait to apply!

Designed for students in Grades 6-12, the Schools Program is part of the legacy of the 2026 IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships, taking place in Ottawa from Sept. 9-19. Through engaging, hands-on visits running until June 2026, students will:

  • Learn the rules and fundamentals of wheelchair basketball
  • Participate in interactive demonstrations and skill-building activities
  • Experience the game firsthand through inclusive play
  • Explore the values of diversity, accessibility and inclusion
  • Receive exclusive invitations to attend the 2026 World Championships

“As a physical education teacher, introducing my students to wheelchair basketball was an incredible experience,” said Patrick Boivin, Health and Physical Education Teacher at St. Matthew High School. “They quickly embraced the challenge, developed new skills and gained a deeper appreciation for adaptive sports. It was amazing to watch the students’ excitement and respect grow as they discovered the athleticism and strategy behind the sport. This experience made physical activity more inclusive while fostering empathy and perseverance, showing how important it is to offer opportunities for all students to get involved in accessible activities.”

Please note, at this time, the program is only visiting schools inthe following Ontario regions: Ottawa-Carleton, Gatineau-Hull, Renfrew County, Lanark County. Schools outside these regions are welcome to book, subject to availability. Please be advised that additional costs may apply.

This unforgettable in-school experience is made possible by our proud partners, including Lépine Apartments and Ottawa Senators Foundation, and in collaboration with Abilities Ottawa, whose continued support helps us inspire the next generation through sport.
